Serendib is another name given by Persian traders, who came to this country to trade gems. Ranthna deepa meaning land of gems, is well known for producing worlds richest and biggest sapphires for thousand years. The blue sapphires found in Sri Lanka are known as Ceylon sapphires. One of the worlds largest sapphires is the 563.35 carat Star of India. Despite its name, this magnificent gem stone was mined in Sri Lanka. The Star of India is currently being shown in New York National Museum.
