Are You In Favor Of Punishment In Cases Of Drug Addiction?
Published by: wktd 2009-01-08

Drug addiction has turned into such an unanswerable problem in itself that when we come across an addict we are in a dilemma as to how to handle this situation. Since many drug abusers are addicted following psychological stress it makes us to ponder what should be taken care of at the outset. This is like a catch 22 situation where we are unable to understand as to what came first the addiction or the stress.

The drug addicts are prone to commit crime of a heinous nature like stealing and murdering etc. that we resent the very concept of forgiveness. But proper analysis should be done before arriving at general conclusions. The addicts have such uncontrollable craving that it blurs their mind compelling them to commit crime to satisfy their needs.

The effect of law on addiction
Stringent laws were passed to curb addiction by considering the trafficking of drugs a punishable offence. Irrespective of whether the committed crime was for the first time, the addict is liable to get jail term as per the law. Various laws are formulated at the state, Federal and local levels but are unable to hold the reins of the problem of drug related crimes. In 1914, the Harrison Act was passed so as to ban the sale of illegal drugs. But still the sale of drugs at streets is a common entity.

Economic strain from addiction
Imprisonment of addicts who have committed crime is not the only solution to the racket of addiction. The cost after imprisonment of convicts in conducting arrests, housing them till and after the trial is a major brunt to the economy. The cost is so exorbitant that investing it for rehabilitation would be a better option. This rehabilitation may also help the criminals to develop various skills which add up to the economic growth.

The treatment of addiction and rehabilitation can render better results because releasing the criminal can endanger the life of the mass. The psychotherapy and counseling given during the course of treatment for addiction helps to prevent further commitment of crime. Some people may argue that addiction is a compulsive disorder and there is no use wasting our time and money on addicts. It is not proper to write off such techniques and trials as they are required for the reformation of the drug abusers.

Final words: law or otherwise, you are with the Drug Lords or the truth.
